WAHOO SEASON IN TURKS AND CAICOS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Fall is here. And with it comes one of the most exciting times to fish in Turks and Caicos—wahoo season.

If you've never hooked into a wahoo, you're missing out on one of the fastest, most aggressive fish in the ocean. They hit hard. They run harder. And they'll test every bit of your skill and your gear.

Ernest Hemingway knew the thrill. In Islands in the Stream, he wrote about wahoo with respect: "They are the fastest fish in the ocean, bar none, and when they hit a bait at that speed, they wreck it." That's not an exaggeration. When a wahoo strikes your line at 50 miles per hour, you know it instantly.

Why Wahoo Season Matters

The waters around Turks and Caicos come alive in the fall. From October through March, wahoo migrate through our area in serious numbers. The ocean temperature drops just enough to bring them in close to the drop-offs and walls where we fish.

This isn't about luck. It's about timing. And right now, the timing is perfect.

What Makes Wahoo Fishing Different

Wahoo are built for speed. They have long, sleek bodies covered in vertical stripes that blur when they move through the water. Their teeth are razor sharp—designed to shred baitfish in one bite.

When you're trolling and a wahoo takes your lure, the reel screams. There's no gentle tap. No warning. Just a sudden, violent explosion of speed as the fish rips line off your reel.

The fight is intense but usually short. Wahoo don't have the endurance of other gamefish. They burn hot and fast. Your job is to hold on and not let them break you off in that first run.

Where We Fish for Wahoo

We target wahoo along the walls and drop-offs that ring the Turks and Caicos islands. These underwater cliffs drop from 50 feet to thousands of feet in a matter of yards. Wahoo patrol these edges, hunting for smaller fish.

We troll high-speed lures at 8 to 15 knots. Wahoo prefer speed. They want a fast-moving target that triggers their predatory instinct.

Most of our wahoo come from depths between 100 and 300 feet, though we've hooked them both shallower and deeper depending on the day.

The Best Time to Fish

Early morning is prime time. The first few hours after sunrise consistently produce the best wahoo action. The fish are actively feeding, and the ocean is calm.

But we've caught wahoo at all times of day. They're opportunistic feeders. If they see something they want, they'll hit it.

The peak months are November through January. That's when we see the most wahoo and the biggest fish. But the season runs from October into early spring, so there's a long window to get out on the water.

What to Expect on a Wahoo Charter

We fish from our 38' Donzi—both equipped for serious offshore work. You'll have quality gear, experienced captains who know these waters, and a boat built for comfort and performance.

We'll head out to the productive zones and set up a spread of lures. Then we wait. Wahoo fishing requires patience between strikes, but when it happens, it's unforgettable.

Most trips produce multiple shots at fish. Some days you'll boat several wahoo. Other days the ocean decides differently. That's fishing.

What to Bring

  • Sunscreen
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Hat with a strap
  • Light layers (mornings can be cool)
  • Camera for the dock photos
  • Cooler if you want to take fish home

We provide all the fishing gear, bait, and can arrange fishing licenses. You just need to show up ready to fish.

After the Catch

Wahoo is excellent eating. The meat is white, firm, and mild—perfect for grilling, searing, or making into ceviche. Many of our guests take their catch back to their rental and cook it fresh.

If you don't want to keep the fish, we practice catch and release. But most people want at least one wahoo for the table. It's too good to pass up.
